Nearly four decades since they patrolled the streets of Chelsea in wax jackets and Alice squads, the Sloan Rangers tribe of London has officially been murdered.
Tatler magazine – the bible for young public figures – has revised its little black book of society’s fittest men and women to replace scheming girls and kashmir girls with athletes and television stars more in sync with the modern world.
Love Island’s Gemma Owen, 19, won the Young Woman of the Year award, while middle-class footballer Mason Mount, 23, who plays in the midfield for Chelsea and England, won.
Love Island’s Gemma Owen, 19, was named Young Woman of the Year
Although Gemma, the daughter of former England striker Michael Owen, has equestrian experience as a contestant on the GB dressage team, she is known to millions of young Britons as the diminutive star of a reality dating show.
The cover of the November issue of Tatler’s Mount features fashion girl Emilia Boateng, daughter of designer Oswald.
One source said: “Tatler’s editor Richard Dennin has always said he wants to make the magazine cooler and more modern and says he’s ‘removed’ the look by removing red pants, tweed and pashminas from the pages.
“Footballers are the new dukes because of their glamorous lifestyle. They are young, have a lot of money, are good looking and have a huge social media presence. Sloan old school is not that interesting.
Richard Dennin, editor of Tatler magazine, “purged” the appearance of his magazine.
Style writer Peter York coined the term Sloan Ranger in 1975 to describe a type of wealthy Londoner living in Sloane Square, Chelsea. Until recently, the Tatler celebrated their social lives on his pages of the spectator community, with white upper-class faces attending editorials and parties.
But the change of course follows the steps that Vogue UK editor Edward Enninful has taken to include models and staff from a wide range of backgrounds. He was also hired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who is Dennen’s mentor.
As revealed by The Mail on Sunday, Wintour said at Vogue events, “Why are there so many white people in the room?”
Mason Mount, 23, a midfielder for Chelsea and England, was named Youngster of the Year.
Three Toffs made the top ten black writers: Marquis of Lorne, Margarita Armstrong-Jones and Hon Delphi Primrose. A publisher source said: “They’re young, modern, and more elegant than a traditional Sloan.
“Lorne is the page of a former queen and future duke…but she’s also very big on TikTok. Margarita Armstrong-Jones was the best dressed queen at the Queen’s funeral. High society is changing and so is the magazine. Nobody reads Tatler to look for Viscount Right anymore.”
Peter York, who wrote The Official Sloan Ranger Handbook in 1982, denied that the tribe was extinct, adding: “They no longer live in Sloan Square.
“The Sloans are smart and well educated people, working for the world’s super-rich in London. Those with great skills work in law firms and those who have not worked in real estate agents in Belgravia.
