Earlier, he was a student at Marakwet High School, but later transferred to Goshen College of Liberty University, a Division I institution, in which he competed for one season.

Kogei had his first cross-country meet as Maple Leaf on October 1, 2023, during the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. He ranked 28th in the race competition, which was the best time for the men’s Gochen College Cross Country Team. He helped lead the team to 13th out of 45 teams, as well as the top 15 national rankings. Because of his championships, Evernes was named College Student of the Week.

The Goshen College student sustained serious injuries to his waist, head, neck and legs and was taken to El Khart General Hospital. He was later taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he died on Saturday, October 22.
